- Safety
Helsinki is considered a very safe city in Finland. Despite being a capital and a famous tourist destination, crime rate is low and maintains a relatively safe environment. However, it is necessary to keep an eye on your luggage at all times and especially in crowded areas.
During peak seasons, it is advisable to be aware of pickpockets or bag snatchers, usually those who operate on bicycles or motorbikes. Many tourists prefer to walk all round the city at night-time, but still areas like Kaisaniemi Park or railway stations should be avoided.

- Smoking
Smoking is strictly prohibited at Helsinki Airport, the same as other European airports but still special smoking zones are available near the gates of the airport. There is a new law that forbids smoking in public areas like shops, offices, buses etc.
- City Transport
In Finland, Helsinki is the only city that provides the transport means of trams or subway trains besides buses, rail and ferry lines. Public transportation is operated by Helsinki City Transport (HKL) and the cheapest option to travel around the city is to hop on the regional bus operated by HKL.
There is also one special ticket known as the Helsinki Card that allows unlimited travel on public transport within the limits of the city and a Regional Ticket to travel within boundaries of Helsinki, Kauniainen, Espoo and Vantaa. In addition, it offers free entry to all the major tourist sights, such as Helsinki Zoo and over 50 museums.
- When to Travel
The best time to visit Helsinki is definitely during the summer season i.e. from June to September. In the summer season the city has long days with warm and mild conditions, whereas during the winter, daytime is only for 6 hours along with very cold weather. All major festivals and art events are celebrated in August, so this month is the best time to explore the art, culture, and beautiful weather of the city.
