If you're craving fresh air and scenic views, Helsinki is the perfect place to visit. The Finnish capital isn't just about saunas, design and great coffee - it's also a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or just fancy a gentle hike through nature, the city offers a wide variety of trails perfect for active adventures.

Here’s our round-up of the best hiking and biking trails around Helsinki to help you get outside and explore.

1. Central Park (Keskuspuisto)

You don't have to travel far to immerse yourself in nature. Central Park stretches over 10km from Töölönlahti Bay to the city’s northern edge through forests, meadows and quiet paths. For hikers, there are several marked trails that make it easy to choose your own pace.

2. Seurasaari

This island, just west of the city centre, is a favourite for both hikers and cyclists. A flat loop trail sweeps the shoreline, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a scenic bike ride. You'll pass by traditional Finnish wooden buildings, part of the open-air museum that gives Seurasaari its rustic charm.

Note: Bikes aren’t allowed inside the museum area, but you can cycle around the island and lock up your bike to explore on foot.

3. Nuuksio National Park

If you’re looking to swap urban life for a more rugged adventure, Nuuksio is the answer. Located about 45 minutes from Helsinki, this national park offers some of the best hiking and biking trails near the city. The marked trails range from easy 2km walks to more challenging 17km loops. Mountain biking is also popular here, with trails that twist through thick pine forests and alongside peaceful lakes.

4. Eastern Helsinki Coastal Route

Stretching from the city centre out to Vuosaari, this coastal cycling route offers stunning views of the Baltic Sea, passing beaches, parks and harbours along the way. It's mostly flat and paved, making it a good option for all cycling levels.

5. Paloheinä

Popular among locals, Paloheinä is part of Helsinki’s Central Park and a hotspot for both hiking and biking. The hilly terrain makes it a great area for trail runners and mountain bikers looking for a bit of a challenge. In winter, it turns into a cross-country skiing hub, but during warmer months, it’s buzzing with active adventurers on foot or wheels.
