Helsinki Christmas Markets 2026: Tuomaan Markkinat and Other Festive Stops

Helsinki Senate Square Christmas market

Helsinki's oldest outdoor Christmas market returns to Senate Square from 27 November to 22 December 2026. Here is how to time your visit, what to buy, and where to find glögi and something warm to eat.

Tuomaan Markkinat at a glance

Every December, Senate Square fills with wooden stalls, a tall Christmas tree and the smell of roasting chestnuts. Tuomaan Markkinat, the St Thomas Christmas Market, bills itself as Helsinki's oldest outdoor Christmas market. It takes place on the square below Helsinki Cathedral.

  • Dates: Friday 27 November to Tuesday 22 December 2026
  • Where: Senate Square (Senaatintori / Senatstorget), city centre
  • Opening hours and admission: 2026 details have not been announced yet, so check the official site

The market closes for the season on 22 December. If you are arriving for Christmas itself, plan your market visit for the days before.

Getting there

Senate Square is in the heart of the old centre. It is an easy walk of about ten minutes from Helsinki Central Station and only a few minutes from the Helsingin yliopisto (University of Helsinki) metro station. Several tram lines run through the surrounding streets. The cathedral's white facade and green domes rise above the square, so you can't miss it.

What to buy

The market's focus is on handicrafts sold by the people who made them. Expect stalls selling:

  • Woollen socks, mittens and hats, which are genuinely useful in a Helsinki December
  • Wooden toys, kitchenware and Christmas decorations
  • Ceramics, glass and jewellery from Finnish makers
  • Edible gifts such as sweets, preserves and baked goods

Part of the appeal is watching the crafts being made. In 2025 visitors could watch glassblowing, chestnut roasting and metal forging over an open fire. These demonstrations make good stops for children, and they also help you decide what is worth carrying home.

What to eat and drink

Hot drinks keep the market going. Glögi, the Nordic mulled drink, is the classic order. Most stalls serve it warm with raisins and almonds, and many offer an alcohol-free version too. Paper cones of sugar-roasted almonds are the other must-have.

For a proper sit-down, the market has had dedicated food areas in past years. These included a Deliyard for food stalls and a Restaurant Yard licensed to serve alcohol. On busy evenings, this is a good place to warm up after dark.

Events and traditions

Opening night

In 2025 the mayor and Santa opened the market on its first Friday, and the Christmas tree lights went on at 18:00. If the same pattern holds, the 2026 opening will fall on Friday 27 November. That evening is crowded but atmospheric, and the tree-lighting is the moment to be there.

Music and processions

The market runs a programme of music through the season. In 2025, for example, the a cappella group Flok gave several performances on the square. Senate Square also plays a part in two of Helsinki's December traditions:

  • Independence Day, 6 December (a Sunday in 2026): the evening student torch procession has traditionally ended at Senate Square.
  • St Lucy's Day, 13 December (also a Sunday): the square has served as a gathering point for the St Lucy procession.

Both events are worth planning around if your dates allow. Confirm the 2026 arrangements closer to the time.

The carousel

A vintage wooden-horse carousel from Tivoli Sariola has been one of the market's traditions. It is a highlight for families, so look for it when you arrive.

How to time your visit

December daylight in Helsinki is short. The sun sets in mid-afternoon in the middle of the month, so the market looks its best from mid-afternoon onwards, when the lights come on. A few tips:

  • For browsing: go on a weekday late morning or early afternoon. The aisles are calmer and the makers have time to chat.
  • For atmosphere: arrive around 15:00–16:00 to catch the last of the blue-hour light. Then stay into the evening.
  • For a night out: Fridays and Saturdays are often the liveliest evenings, so check the closing time and plan time for glögi in the food area after work hours.
  • To avoid crowds: skip the weekends just before 22 December if you can. The final days are the busiest.

Dress for standing still outdoors. Wear warm boots, layers, a hat and gloves, even if the weather looks mild. The square is open to the wind, and an hour of browsing gets cold quickly.

Other festive stops

Senate Square is the main event, but it is not the only Christmas market in the region. If you have a spare day, consider the train trip to Hämeenlinna Castle, which held its own one-day "Tuomaan markkinat" inside the medieval castle on 20 December 2025, with free entry. Its 2026 date had not been announced at the time of writing.

Smaller seasonal and design markets also appear around Helsinki in November and December, often for a single weekend. Dates are usually announced only a few weeks ahead, so check local event listings once you have fixed your travel dates.

Before you go

The market dates above come from the organiser. Opening hours, admission, programme details, the opening-night schedule, food vendors and traditions such as the carousel are confirmed each season, so check before you go on the official Tuomaan Markkinat website.
